Few storefronts cram in as much tangible culinary passion per square foot as this South Philly shop, which is bursting at the seams with the house-cured meats that fuel their deli business and lunchtime programming, and a newly added lineup of Pennsylvania beer, wine, and spirits (rye in particular) that will round out liquid from its own forthcoming Punk Rock Wine Co. All of that energy comes together in Heavy Metal’s trattoria dinners, served by shop owners Melissa Pellegrino and chef Patrick Alfiero. The rotating eight-course, Italian-leaning meal wends its way from crudite and charcuterie to pasta courses and hearty entrees peppered with house-butchered proteins. The menu is stacked with local produce and cheese from the likes of Green Meadow Farm, Linden Dale Farms, and a Rutgers research lab. Opt to sit at the chef’s counter for roughly $20 more than a dining room seat, and Alfiero will slide you surprising bites you’ll only find here — think sheep coppa and whipped goat meat. — Jenn Ladd
